It is difficult to capture the illustrious life of Muhiyus-Sunnah Allama Mahmudul Hasan on paper. He presently serves as Chairman of Al-Haiatul Ulya lil-Jamiatil Qawmia Bangladesh — the highest authority of Qawmi madrasas in Bangladesh — and as President of Befaqul Madarisil Arabia Bangladesh.

For a very long time he has served as Muhtamim of Jamia Islamia Darul Uloom Madania, Jatrabari, Dhaka, and as Khatib of the Gulshan Central Mosque. For his extraordinary role across every field of religious service he is honoured and cherished by the people of the country.

Among the leaders of religious life, the scholars and the spiritual masters of the land, he occupies a seat of particular honour and dignity. What follows are only a few drops drawn from the ocean of his life.

The course of a life

A life at a glance

  1. 1950

    Born on 5 July, corresponding to 1370 AH, into a pious and respected Muslim family in the village of Charkharicha, Kotwali, Mymensingh.

  2. 1967

    Enrolled in the Jalalayn class at the historic Jamia Quraniya Arabia Lalbagh in what was then East Pakistan; the same year admitted to the Mishkat class at Jamiatul Uloomil Islamia, New Town, West Pakistan.

  3. 1969

    Completed Dawra-e-Hadith at New Town, studying Sahih al-Bukhari with Allama Yusuf Binnori (rah.); placed first in the examination of Pakistan's Wifaq with the highest marks in its history at the time. Memorised the entire Qur'an in twenty-eight days during a single Ramadan.

  4. 1970

    Returned to Pakistan for higher study and completed advanced research at New Town. In the same year the foundation of the Jatrabari madrasa was laid by Hafizul Hadith Allama Abdullah Darkhwasti (rah.), and he taught here for six months.

  5. 1970–74

    Appointed Muhaddith at Jamia Farooqia, the centre of Pakistan's Wifaq; taught Sahih Muslim and Sharh Ma'ani al-Athar of Imam Tahawi; honoured with the title 'Sharih-e-Muslim' for his commentary on the Muqaddimah of Sahih Muslim.

  6. 1975

    Came directly from Pakistan to the Jatrabari Jamia and took charge as acting Nazim-e-Talimat.

  7. 1980

    Assumed full charge of the Jamia's ihtimam; from that day a modest institution began its transformation into a rich garden of knowledge and wisdom.

  8. 1983

    The Dawra-e-Hadith class had only six students — today nearly two thousand study there, making it the second-largest gathering for Hadith in the world.

  9. 1993

    Appointed Amir of Majlis-e-Dawatul Haq Bangladesh by Allama Shah Abrarul Haq Haqqi (rah.).

  10. 2020

    Elected President of Befaqul Madarisil Arabia Bangladesh on 3 October, and ex officio Chairman of Al-Haiatul Ulya lil-Jamiatil Qawmia Bangladesh (re-elected 7 October 2023).

  11. 2023

    Represented Bangladesh at the two-day international Islamic conference in Makkah beginning 13 August, held under the patronage of King Salman bin Abdulaziz and attended by more than one hundred and fifty scholars from eighty-five countries; presented seven proposals for the peace and security of the global Muslim ummah.

Birth

In the soil of Charkharicha

Allama Mahmudul Hasan was born on 5 July 1950, corresponding to 1370 AH, in the village of Charkharicha under Kotwali police station of Mymensingh district, into a pious and respected Muslim family. His father was Ghalimuddin Ahmad and his mother Fatema Ramjani.

Reliable accounts hold that his forefathers came to this land from Afghanistan, Iran or that region. From childhood his foresight, liveliness and intelligence — and a rare gift for winning hearts — were widely spoken of.

Childhood and maktab

The 'Bismillah' at his mother's hand

The 'Bismillah' of this future star's learning was performed at the hand of his own mother, Fatema Ramjani. He received his systematic lessons in the Noble Qur'an from Qari Abdur Rashid (rah.) of the Charkharicha bazaar, and his early Bengali schooling at the Charkharicha school.

Thereafter, under the supervision and encouragement of his cousin Maulana Nuruddin, he entered the Kitab department.

A shadow of grief

The passing of his father and mother

While the student Mahmud was studying the Mizan class at Jamia Islamia in Mymensingh, his father Muhammad Ghalimuddin answered the call of his Lord, leaving two children orphaned. As the elder son he was profoundly shaken; the grief of that parting in so young a life disturbed the rhythm of his studies.

A year after his father's death he received news of another sorrow: his mother, the one support left to two children adrift on a shoreless sea, also departed this world.

Education

From Lalbagh to New Town

He studied the early classes of religious learning up to the Hidayah class in various institutions of his own greater Mymensingh district, under the care of devoted teachers. In 1967 he was admitted to the Jalalayn class at the historic Jamia Quraniya Lalbagh Madrasa of what was then East Pakistan.

The Muhtamim of the madrasa at the time was Mujahid-e-Azam Shamsul Haq Faridpuri (rah.), known as Sadar Sahib Hujur. Seeing his intense thirst and irrepressible ardour for knowledge, Sadar Sahib Hujur (rah.) encouraged him to travel to West Pakistan.

It so happened that Allama Yusuf Binnori (rah.) — the worthy student of Allama Anwar Shah Kashmiri (rah.), the greatest Muhaddith of the subcontinent — came one day to Lalbagh Madrasa. Sadar Sahib said to him: 'In my madrasa there is a student who loves you; he has written something out of his affection for you.' Binnori (rah.) read the writing, was greatly pleased, and granted him admission to his own institution, Jamiatul Uloomil Islamia, New Town. Thus in 1967 he was admitted to the Mishkat class there.

Within a short time this future gem drew the favourable notice of Binnori (rah.). In 1969, at New Town, he studied Sahih al-Bukhari with Binnori (rah.). He soon became known and beloved to all the teachers of New Town, and his reputation spread throughout the Jamia.

Having completed the highest level of Qawmi madrasa education, that very year he sat the examination of Pakistan's Wifaq — the Qawmi madrasa education board — and stood first with the highest marks, the highest recorded in the Wifaq's history at that time. After completing Dawra-e-Hadith, a powerful desire arose in him to memorise the entire Qur'an; by the mercy of Allah and the strength of his keen intellect and memory, he completed the memorisation of the whole Qur'an in twenty-eight days of a single Ramadan.

In 1970 he went again to Pakistan for higher study and completed advanced research at New Town. In that period he was blessed with the closest companionship of Binnori (rah.). He even played a notable part in Binnori's compilation of Ma'arif al-Sunan, the peerless commentary on Jami' al-Tirmidhi. More than once he had the privilege of accompanying Binnori (rah.) on journeys to Egypt.

His appetite for study was remarkable. He had read through nearly every book in the New Town library. He would be so absorbed in study that in the afternoons, when everyone else went walking, he remained immersed in his reading.

Research

The writing of 'Al-Imam Abu Yusuf'

Under Binnori's supervision he earned a higher degree in Hadith and the sciences of Hadith, and at his instruction composed the three-volume scholarly work 'Al-Imam Abu Yusuf: Muhaddithan wa Faqihan', which stands to this day as witness to his mastery of the science of Hadith.

Career

From Jessore Railway Station to Jamia Farooqia

When he first returned from West Pakistan to his own land — then East Pakistan — Maulana Abul Hasan (rah.), Muhtamim of the Jessore Railway Station Madrasa, wrote to Allama Yusuf Binnori (rah.) requesting a teacher for his madrasa. Binnori (rah.) replied: 'I have a teacher — highly capable and worthy. But he has gone to East Pakistan.'

Following the address given in the letter, Maulana Abul Hasan (rah.) came to Mymensingh and appointed Allama Mahmudul Hasan as a teacher in his madrasa. Thus his teaching career began at the Jessore Railway Station Madrasa. While there he taught twelve books in all, including Bukhari, Muslim, Tirmidhi and Sharh al-Tahdhib. He taught there for about a year.

While he was in Jessore, the foundation of the Jatrabari madrasa was laid through Hafizul Hadith Allama Abdullah Darkhwasti (rah.). That day Qazi Mu'tasim Billah (rah.) brought Allama Mahmudul Hasan to Jatrabari, where he taught for six months. Then, in 1970, he went once more to Pakistan and there earned a higher degree in Fiqh and Hadith.

When Allama Salimullah Khan (rah.), Muhtamim of Jamia Farooqia — the centre of Pakistan's Wifaq — asked Allama Yusuf Binnori (rah.) for a teacher for his madrasa, Binnori consulted Wali Hasan Tonki (rah.) and Ishaq Siddiqi (rah.) and, judging their beloved student Mahmudul Hasan worthy, appointed him Muhaddith of Jamia Farooqia.

Later he also discharged the duties of Talimat for a period. There he taught the Hadith works Sahih Muslim and Sharh Ma'ani al-Athar of Imam Tahawi. In those days Nizamuddin Shamzai — who later served as Shaikhul Hadith and Chief Mufti at Binnori's madrasa — recorded his learned and finely researched lessons. From those lessons he afterwards composed a commentary on the Muqaddimah of Sahih Muslim and was honoured with the title 'Sharih-e-Muslim'.

In Pakistan Allama Mahmudul Hasan taught regularly at Jamia Farooqia. Then in 1974 he returned home and once more joined the Jatrabari madrasa.

Back to the Jatrabari Jamia

In 1975 Maulana Mahmudul Hasan came directly from Pakistan to the Jatrabari Jamia. On the day of his arrival, Qazi Sahib Hujur placed his hand upon his breast and said to the students in the Jamia's mosque: 'Today my dearest and most capable student will arrive here.'

From his arrival he served as acting Nazim-e-Talimat. Then in 1976 Qazi Sahib (rah.) departed along with several other teachers. At that time Shaikh Tajammul Ali (rah.) was Muhtamim of the madrasa. After Qazi Sahib (rah.) left, Shaikh Tajammul Ali (rah.) remained at the Jamia for two years, and he too took his leave in 1978.

Ihtimam

Assuming charge, and the transformation of the Jamia

After Shaikh Tajammul Ali (rah.) departed, Allama Mahmudul Hasan, then Nazim-e-Talimat, was given charge as acting Muhtamim. In 1980 he was entrusted with the full ihtimam of the Jamia.

From the moment he took charge the picture of the Jamia began to change; from a small institution it has grown into the vast establishment and rich garden of knowledge and wisdom that it is today. Through his years of labour and striving, of teaching and spiritual training and skilful administration, the Jamia rose to become a historic lighthouse of prophetic ideals and consciousness.

In 1983 there were only six students in the Dawra-e-Hadith class. Today nearly two thousand students of sacred knowledge study Hadith at the Jamia, making it the second-largest gathering for Hadith in the world.

His contribution to building this Jamia stone by stone cannot be denied. When its buildings were raised he worked with his own hands, and his beloved students were beside him. Yet there was a time when, for want of funds, he had to carry the sacks of rice and potatoes for the Jamia's boarding house upon his own shoulders.

Character

A living image of the Prophetic Sunnah

In spreading the Sunnah of the Prophet his renown has travelled the world. From village to city, and from the city to the countries of the earth, he journeys everywhere carrying the call to the Sunnah. Under the banner of Dawatul Haq he works to revive the prophetic Sunnah across the world.

His adherence to even the smallest Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is truly astonishing. He holds a deep affection for his students and is scrupulous about their rights. However busy he may be, however far away, he will travel by air if need be to reach the Jamia and deliver a single lesson to his students.

He honours the teachers of the Jamia greatly. Beyond their salaries he assists them wholeheartedly in every need. He gives to the needy with both hands. From his own charity he bears the maintenance of many widows. He himself bears the study and living expenses of many students of the Jamia.

In his dealings he is utterly clean and unblemished. He accepts no salary from the Jamia. Even for the room in which he lives he pays the monthly rent. No furniture of the Jamia is kept in his room, and he uses none of the Jamia's property for personal purposes.

His children

Allama Mahmudul Hasan has six children in all — two sons and four daughters. His two sons are Maulana Maimun Hasan and Maulana Masrur Hasan.

On the world stage

Beyond the borders

Because of his intellect, ability, competence, forbearance, purity of soul and fear of God, he is a figure of the deepest reverence in Bangladesh; and beyond its borders too, across many arenas of religious life, an evident regard and admiration is directed towards him.

Apart from his influence and standing in the Middle East, he is held in particular reverence throughout the countries of the subcontinent in the chain of Dawatul Haq. The learned of the Arab world too incline more each day towards his knowledge, his call and his work of reform, in which his Arabic and Urdu writings have played an immeasurable part. To this end he has travelled to Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Qatar, Pakistan, India, Bahrain and America.

Under the patronage of King Salman bin Abdulaziz, a two-day international Islamic conference began in Makkah on Sunday 13 August 2023, attended by more than one hundred and fifty scholars and muftis from eighty-five countries. Representing Bangladesh at that conference, Allama Mahmudul Hasan delivered an epoch-making address and presented seven proposals for the peace and security of the global Muslim ummah.

Earlier he had addressed an educational seminar in Makkah in 1991 on preserving Islamic civilisation; a conference in Saudi Arabia on 28 May 1993 on the principles of the Qur'an; a gathering in Madinah on 13 March 1998 on Islam's influence upon European civilisation; and, in 1999, a discourse at the Islamic University of Madinah on the authority of the Hanafi school. That same year he visited London and the United States; in 2000 he spoke at the East London Mosque, and in 2013 at the Dawatul Haq conference in Qatar.

The service of the pen

In the world of writing too he moves with vigour. Alongside his stirring oratory he has rendered an extraordinary service through his pen, age after age. His Arabic, Bengali and Urdu works number more than a hundred. A tireless sentinel of the Muslim ummah, this great scholar has taken up his pen to address almost every problem of the ummah and has offered guidance suited to the age. From a heart filled with love for the Prophet (peace be upon him) have flowed thousands of lines of loving verse, composed in both Arabic and Urdu.

Alongside his manifold labours in the popular call to religion in Bangladesh, for half a century we have received from him the practice of the Sunnah, the teaching of the sacred sciences and books rich in research. In mosques and madrasas, in gatherings of admonition and on journeys at home and abroad, his learned and spiritually profound discourses have filled society with light.

May Allah keep the shade of this great man of the faith spread over us for many years to come, and may He lengthen among us the radiant light of this burning lamp of the age. Ameen.
